This slime is glowing in the dark...

Image
Today we made some glow worms! These acutally glowed A LOT stronger than I anticipated and it was pretty cool to play with them. They started out squishy gel and then we added them to liquid and the longer they were in there the more firm they got. We let them sit out for awhile after we were finished with this to dehydrate and then threw them back in to see what would happen too. Evie loved taking them in and out of the dark to watch them glow! In her little jar they kind of looked like glowing brains.   This was a fun, not very messy activity and the worms lasted for hours of fun before they started to get dry. We also made some sticky slime today and MAN was it STICKY. I expected it to be since that's literally what it was called but it was EVERYWHERE. I'm glad we did that one outside! :P

I lava you...

It is finally starting to clear up outside and it wasn't super rainy today (although it was pretty hot!) so we got to get outside and play some! Today we made a clay volcano and Evie got to use fizzy tabs and water to make it erupt! We did this before with baking soda and vinegar and today we got to talk about why it works with citric acid and water too. Eruptions are ALWAYS a hit with Evie and she enjoyed making the little volcano too, although the clay was a bit hard to work with since it had started to set up some. It was still fun to watch. :)

Chalk art and sidewalk science...

Image
Today was SUCH a beautiful day. We spent almost all of it outside playing. Before school we jumped on the trampoline and made some fun chalk art on the sidewalk. Over the summer I taught Evie to make rainbows using her fingers to smudge the chalk together and she's been itching to try it out again. So we made rainbows, drew our names, and then played a game where we each choose a color of chalk and the other has to draw something that color.  After school we did some experimentation with colored water and paper towels. We had this water leftover from dip dying some wooden pieces and she had a lot of fun watching the water creep up the towels and guessing which color would reach the top first. It was a really fun day and it has us wishing for more warmer weather!

A storms a brewin...

Today we did some science to learn about how storms form. We used red warm water and blue ice cubes in a bin so that we could see how they would react when they hit each other.  We put the red in first so it spread pretty quickly and then we added the blue ice cubes. While the reaction was happening I explained to Evie that when warm, moist air hits the cooler air it gets pushed upward. Once the warm air cools down it starts to form clouds and when the clouds are too heavy it will start to rain. When it's really hot out the clouds can get very tall and sometimes, the movement of air can even cause tornadoes! During the experiment, Evie got to see how the blue cold water pushes the red warm water up to the top corner. You can also do this experiment by adding warm and cold water to a bin of room temperature water to watch the blue water sink under the red! It was fun to watch and we recreated it a few times! We had a lot of fun this week learning about climates and the weathe...

Ice, Ice Baby...

Image
This week along with weather we've been talking about climates and how we are all adapted and suited for where we live. Today we switched up our sensory table for a snowy, icy, arctic one. I wasn't sure how Evie would like this one because while she loves water play she does NOT like to be sticky or slimy. The snow (which is fake snow made from powder ) isn't cold at all but it gets sort of gel like when you mix the two.  She had fun balancing the animals on the ice and digging them into the snow for awhile and then she cautiously asked if she could mix the snow and water. When I told her of course she can she was ecstatic. She found that adding snow to water caused the snow to "melt" and adding the water to the snow melted it down into gelatinous pools of blue "ice".  After lunchtime we took this one outside and she played with it for HOURS. Tossing the snow, making "food" out of the mixed snow and ice and pretending her Chelsea doll was o...
