Mobile to Biloxi...

Today we did a series of mini trips while we made our way from Florida to Louisiana for our final vacation destination of New Orleans. This was an add on to our originally planned trip and even though we were all tired and feeling a bit under the weather it was worth it. We started in Mobile, AL. There were quite a few cute little shops there as well as lots of street art. We didn't stay in Mobile long but we snapped a few photos and enjoyed the sights before we headed off on our way.

Stop two was in Biloxi, MS. There is a lighthouse there which has some cool history and near by it is a Hurricane Katrina memorial. Evie and I have talked about weather, climate, and hurricanes on more than a few occasions and it was a really great way to show her how hurricanes can affect people and nature and how we, as a society can help and rebuild. We got to see some of the items they gathered from homes that had been destroyed, a memorial with names of people who died or were missing from the area, this pretty glass mosaic...

...and the remnants of a tree that was destroyed in the hurricane. Artists have now turned the remaining tree into this pretty piece of art. There are also water lines on some of the posts in the park so Evie got to see just how high the water really got after Katrina hit. It was sobering to see but it was a really cool experience for all of us.

The lighthouse in Biloxi was built in 1848, was one of the first cast iron lighthouses erected in the US, AND has been kept by female keepers for more years than any other lighthouse in the United States. Just a lot of cool history here in Biloxi to see. We stopped and took it all in for a bit and ran around and stretched our legs and then we hit the road one more time towards New Orleans. It was a long day but really educational and lots of fun!
