Pizza and a movie...

We made it through the first week of school! Rather, the first two days...but still that feels like a huge deal. Today after I picked Evie up we had a little Target run and she used her allowance to get a new LOL doll and a Squishmallow. Then we came home and made a pizza together and settled in to watch a movie together.

She's VERY into space and really wants to be an astronaut when she grows up and as such has been begging me to watch Lightyear. So we decided to go ahead and do it. I was a little worried some parts would be a little scary for her but she did really well. She has a very good understanding of real vs pretend and when things got dicey I also reminded her that Buzz is safe and sound in Woody's room later in his life so we know he's gonna come out of it OK. That seemed to help! She didn't love all of the movie but was VERY interested in how the space ships worked and what it's like to feel no gravity and how their suits worked. So I think it's time for another space themed week soon! I love watching her light up when she sees things that interest her and hearing all the questions she comes up with. Sometimes I know the answers and sometimes we have to consult Google. Other times we get to do cool experiments to figure them out too. ;P In either event it's always an adventure with her and it's one of my favorite parts of motherhood. Next week themes and learning are back! We are going to continue to learn at home and we're going to continue to research homeschool as well. While I love that she can make friends and have a structured curriculum at school, I also really don't think she gets enough of the things she really WANTS to learn about and a lot of what is taught is also not super necessary to her later life. I'd love to have a situation where she could more organically learn and explore more heavily what is interesting to her while just getting exactly what she needs of the basics. I also don't love the idea of giving up eight hours of her day to sitting in a desk. BUT...we're weighing the pros and cons and logistics of it to see where we will fall next year. Having a more flexible schedule opens up worlds of travel and adventure for us (and makes dance and gymnastics WAY easier to get to as now we're almost late running from school) but it also means continuing to work from home, school from home, and parent from home for me and that can be a lot! lol so we'll see. But in the mean time the learning continues! ;p Next week we're learning about geography, climates, and weather. I can't wait!
