Typhoons and tired Evies...
Today we learned about the climate of the Philippines and we also learned a few Filipino words which was a lot of fun. Evie was very interested in how they manage to speak so many languages there. I asked her, knowing that it's an archipelago, and knowing the climate of another archipelago (Hawaii) what she thought the weather might be like there. She quickly said "HOT! Tropical!" So then we got into what kind of natural disasters a tropical climate might bring. She guessed it would be hurricanes and while she is correct, when hurricanes occur in the Eastern Hemisphere we refer to them as typhoons. So we did some learning about typhoons today and how they could affect Filipino people.
While we talked we made some shaving cream typhoons. This was really fun because Evie got to play in the cream and the paint, there was a surprise reveal and then she got to just play with what was leftover which made her very happy. First we dropped paint into a bin of shaving cream...
...next we gently pressed paper into the cream and paint.
Last we used a squeegee to scrape the mix of the paper. This is what we were left with! Three swirly typhoon art pages. Evie liked the wavy one the best and my favorite was the one on the top right. This was super fun and Evie loved the reveal when we scraped away the cream and she got to see the design. Her favorite part, however...
...was making a HUGE mess out of the leftover cream. It was a fun messy play day though and we learned a lot. Unfortunately, the fun had to end so we could get ready for school and Evie was not ready at all for it. We do have a countdown clock and I give her several reminders so she knows school time is coming but she still just hasn't adjusted well to it. Today she actually told me she was too tired and needed to take a nap which is very unlike her. She hasn't napped in years. Nevertheless she made it on the bus with minimal tears. Here's hoping that school gets easier and less boring for her soon. <3
