When it rains...

Evie had another rough morning today. Even though school didn't affect her sleeping or her morning routine it has been a big adjustment for her. Typically we start the morning with breakfast, some kind of movement, then sensory and free play and lunch. Then after lunch we have quiet time and then we do our science, STEM or cooking. Now that she is in school there is no quiet time so we go from lunch to the bus stop and then to school. Before she started I thought she'd really appreciate not having to have quiet time and we have shifted our other afternoon activities into the morning by just doing less each day. But it's been really hard for her. She doesn't enjoy sitting in a chair, she dislikes doing worksheets and independent learning, and she isn't a fan of not being able to get a drink or go to the bathroom when she needs to.

I'm hopeful that as time goes on she will adjust to school and learn to like it but homeschooling is still heavy on my mind for next year. Evie is already ahead of her classmates since she is at a second grade level by her schools standards. So a year off whether it goes well or poorly won't affect her too much at the end of the day. She has always been a big hands on learner and she is so full of questions and curiosity so it makes me sad to see her so discouraged about learning when she has previously been so passionate about it. At any rate we talked today about how the weather can be affected by climate changes and how that affects the animals and plants that reside there. We mae this little bubble wrap rain picture and then I let her make her own paintings for awhile.

We took an extended lunch break today and skipped our cooking activity for some extra play time together. Yesterday she came home in tears telling me it was her worst day ever. I asked her what was her best day ever and given all the travel we do and all the cool places we've been I definitely was expecting one of those big things to make the list. Instead she recalled a time we played a game together in the yard and I was picking her up and chasing her around. Things like that really make me think. This tiny little 10 minute spur of the moment game that we played while we were waiting for dinner to arrive is her favorite day. So I really wanted to take extra time and just play with her today to try to cheer her up before school. She still fought me tooth and nail about going but hopefully when we get through the first few weeks she will feel better about it. :)
