These are the voyages of Evie and Mama...

 


Today was a busy day! It was the first day of Space Week and Evie was absolutely ecstatic when she woke up today and found a sunshine and some planets on her desk. After exclaiming "IS IT SPACE WEEK?!?!" she then flipped over the sunshine and said "A SPACE hunt?! Oh I'm so excited!" So I think it's gonna be a pretty big win of a week in general.  The sunshine was our first scavenger hunt of the day and her big treasure at the end was some fruit snacks.




Then we did some activity sheets, learned about gravity and talked about why Saturn has rings (and also why some other planets like Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus have rings!), and then started a color hunt which was really successful. This was a new activity for us and it required minimal effort from me and she loved it so I think we'll weave it into future weeks.








We did a few more small activities and I was really surprised that Evie knows so much about space and planets. We have talked about space loads in the past because it's very interesting to her and I know she knows what planet she lives on and why but I was pretty impressed that she knew how to put the planets in order by how they orbit the sun. We also talked a little about how the atmosphere of Earth works and why things that are in space (typically) stay in space.






We made a quiet bottle after lunch that has some space themed large plastic pieces in it. There is a spinner you can use to find the items in the bottle. Then we ran to the store for a few quick groceries...but our car battery died! So a quick trip ended up taking a pretty long time and Evie got a quick lesson on how cars work. 😂 Luckily we were in a place where we could buy a car battery and we also have some pretty great people in our lives who are willing help us out when we get into a pickle. 





We wrapped up the day with some rocket pop snacks. These took no time to make and were a delicious and nutritious snack! Tomorrow we are going to focus on the moon and sun so stay tuned to see what fun treats we have in store!

Seed paper...

  Today we made some seed paper! It was chillier out today so we tried to squeeze this one in before it got TOO cold. Yesterday we shredded up some paper we got from Nana and soaked it in some water.  Then Evie got to add some dye into the mix to try to make it look pink. This worked pretty well but it wasn't as bold when the paper dried later. She had fun mixing it up and then we took it to the blender to get it really nice and pulpy.  After that we took it outside to smoosh out the water over a screen we made. Last we turned them out onto towels and Evie got to add seeds. I know you can add them into the pulp mix as well but I didn't want them to sprout and the paper is going to be wet for a few days at least since it's chilly and rainy out now. Once these are done we will cut then into shapes and use them in her bee garden next month. She really had a lot of fun with this one and it was such a cheap and easy thing to do. Arts AND Crafts...

  Today we had art day and worked on some fun projects together. I told Evie this morning that it was arts and crafts day and she was SUPER excited because other than STEM day, arts and crafts are her favorite. We started off this afternoon with some potato stamping. I set this up while Evie was doing her quiet time and when I presented her with the paint, canvas, and potato she said to me "Mama I thought that potato was my snack!" 😂😂 She was definitely relieved to find out it wasn't for eating.  She had a lot of fun smashing it around and combining the colors to make her picture. After we finished our potato painting we had some free play and made chalk houses for her LOL dolls for awhile. We also made use of the sunny day (the first in awhile!) to plant a tree in the yard together. Ice, Ice Baby...

    This week along with weather we've been talking about climates and how we are all adapted and suited for where we live. Today we switched up our sensory table for a snowy, icy, arctic one. I wasn't sure how Evie would like this one because while she loves water play she does NOT like to be sticky or slimy. The snow (which is fake snow made from powder ) isn't cold at all but it gets sort of gel like when you mix the two.  She had fun balancing the animals on the ice and digging them into the snow for awhile and then she cautiously asked if she could mix the snow and water. When I told her of course she can she was ecstatic. She found that adding snow to water caused the snow to "melt" and adding the water to the snow melted it down into gelatinous pools of blue "ice".  After lunchtime we took this one outside and she played with it for HOURS.
