Adventures of Evie

  Today we are talking about hearing. This was a fun one because we are HUGE music lovers in this house. We sing and dance every single day and have so much fun with it. Today we talked about sound and how we use it to communicate and how it can help us to get around and navigate danger. We also just had loads of fun playing with instruments. Evie is a huge fan of the guitar... ...and we tried out some drums and tambourines too. After we finished playing with music I used some headphones to play some sounds for Evie to see if she could tell me what they were. It was really fun, and she did a great job! Today was also family day so after we finished up our hearing activities, we did some letter review and headed up to Nana's house for some family time. Tomorrow's focus is touch. It should be a really fun one too! :)

  This week we are starting to learn about the five senses. We are also reviewing the letters G, H, and I. We started this morning with some worksheets and a plan to focus on talking about sight today. She's doing really well with writing her letters and recognizing them. We talked about what we use sight for, how its important, and also how people (and animals) who don't have sight navigate that. We did a little scavenger hunt too where I asked her to find me things that were a certain color or shape. As we went through our activities and routine this morning, she kept asking me if we could PLEASE go to the museum today. So, I decided to let her have her way! When we got there, she was so excited to find Braille. We talked about it and I showed her what it looks like and how it works but she's never really paid attention to it when we're out places before.   It's the weekend!! Well sort of...this is a wrap up post of our weekend activities but really, they started on Friday. I had the day off Friday, and we used it to run a TON of errands. We had returns to do, packages to ship, groceries to get, and a library trip to get out of the way. So, we made ourselves some coffee (hot cocoa for Evie!) and headed out to get it done.  On Saturday we took a trip across the border for some fun at the aquarium. Evie got to touch some sharks and feed these rays. She did pretty well with it this time. Usually, she drops the food as soon as the rays start to come up. She did get splashed in the face though, which wasn't her favorite. We also got to see the octopus. He's rarely out where you can see him, and it was so wild to see the way he moves across the tank. Definitely worth the wait! At the very end Evie got to walk across the shark tank on the Shark Bridge. It's one of her favorite parts of the aquarium. We also stopped by a local b...

  It's our last day of woodland creatures week since tomorrow I am off work. We continued practicing letters today and we had another "cooking" activity. It wasn't so much cooking as putting together food but it keeps her engaged and it's fun to eat! Today we talked about hibernation, and we made pretzel and cheese trees (and squirrels!) and made a forest for some graham bears. Evie loved getting to make shapes in the cheese and putting the plate together. She also had fun making up stories about why the bears were disappearing as she ate them! 😂 After we finished up snack time and working on our letters we decided to get some fresh air since it's been a REALLY nice day. We sang and danced and played outside until the sun set. She was so happy to play outside in the warm air that she actually asked me if it were summer.   We're still having a lot of fun with Woodland Creature week. Today we talked about skunks and squirrels but I had set up this cute handprint hedgehog yesterday that we forgot to do so we did it today instead. For some reason today Evie was NOT about playing with her sensory bin and she told me in no uncertain terms that she was NOT playing with dirty leaves from the yard (nevermind that she plays with them all the time IN the yard) and asked for sand and Sago's instead so we swapped up her bin... She had a lot of fun digging them out of the sand and pretending they were lost. We were going to do a little woodsy scavenger hunt today but since we opted to do her hedgehog art we skipped that and went straight to her favorite subject; science! The plan today was to make slime "worms" but since she seemed to be having one of those days where she didn't want to touch "dirty" things and since we had a slime incident the other day which led to me having to goo...

  Today we continued our woodland creature week by talking about some animals that live in the trees. We talked about owls, and about squirrels, and about racoons and how they each prepare and handle winter. Evie has seen a lot of geese migrating recently and it's been fun this week talking about how different animals deal with the colder weather. We made some yummy owl "toasts" for our snack time using chocolate rice cakes, peanut butter and various fruits. We also continued working on Evie's letters and her name (even though she is an absolute pro at writing and spelling it!) by making a little tree with her name on it. She had fun putting the letters in order and gluing them onto the tree trunks. It turned out pretty cute! We had family night tonight, so we headed to Nana's house after our snack time and enjoyed dinner and talking with family. :)

  This week is woodland creature week! December is going to be a shorter month for us with preschool since I have a week of paid leave at the end and we have a short week almost every single week as well so I decided to weave a few fun themes in with some letter review. This week we are reviewing D, E, and F while we learn about animals that live in the woods. Her sensory bin this week was free which is always a plus! It's just leaves I cleaned up from the yard and some pinecones, foam pumpkins and Wizard Tom and Barb from her Sago boxes for some color.  It's getting harder to take nice photos since it's so dreary outside so you'll have to bear with me on some of these "action" shots but for our fun activity today we made play-doh hedgehogs. Evie had a lot of fun sticking in the toothpicks and eyes and we talked about what hedgehogs are and how they use their quills to protect themselves from predators.
